Press Release: The Potiskum Writers Association have made a call out for this month's entries and the category shall be in Poetry and Short stories. The competition is open to Nigerian writers irrespective of their place of residence.
INTRODUCTION
The POWA's Short Story Writing and poetry Competition hopes to serve as a beacon for the development of Nigerian literature as well as broaden the knowledge base and hone the writing skills of its members.
This competition will be organized monthly as the association prepares to produce anthologies of 100 short stories and poetry which will be published in English and Nigerian languages that will comprise of well composed write ups.
THEME
Every month, the competition will announce a thematic occupation that entries are supposed to revolve around. The theme for this month of June 2020, is PATIENCE.
Writers are allowed to play around with this theme in various means in their stories, but mainly in creative and fictional means, non-fiction of any means or translations or other genres of writing will not be accepted.
WORD COUNT
■ Short stories: all entries in this category must should fall between the word count of 1000 - 1500 words. Type in single line space, 12 font size formatted in Times New Romans on A4 size.
■ Poetry: all entries under this category should reach 30 lines and not exceed 50 lines.
GUIDELINES
1. The entries can be short story or poems. A participant cannot submit his/her entries in both the two categories.
2. All entries must be original owned by the participant and have never been published elsewhere.
3. The entries must be submitted in one of the following languages ​​(Hausa or English)
4. All entries should be well edited and free from grammatical errors.
5. Any entry submitted without the hashtag #POWA2020contest05 will not be considered by judges/moderators.
6. All entries should conform to Nigerian traditions and cultural norms.
6. Entries are open to writers nationwide with no specifications for ages.
7. Joint entries are not allowed, only one writer per story/poetry.
SUBMISSION
All entries should be sent to powaexcos@gmail.com as a Microsoft Word attachment including full name, a short bio, home or office address and phone number.
PRIZES
This competition is primarily aimed at helping young/inspiring writers who are incapable of publishing books of their own get a means by which their works will be published in the Potiskum Writers Association anthology of short stories and poems is the background for this competition. Therefore, no cash prizes will be offered for now.
The top 3 Entries will be awarded prizes as follows:
1st Position: Certificate of Excellence and ten (10) copies of the published anthology.
2nd Position: Certificate of Excellence and eight (8) copies of the published anthology.
3rd Position: Certificate of Excellence and six (6) copies of the published anthology.
Other top 3 entries will be published as part of an anthology and certificates of recognition will be provided as well as one copy of the published anthology to each of the writers whose works are selected.
COMPETITION TIMELINE
Submissions will be open from June 9, 2020 and close at 11:59pm West African Time (WAT) on June 30, 2020. Entries sent outside the time-frame will not be considered.
The results will be announced on July 05, 2020
